Commonly Asked Paternity Questions
On this page:
How is DNA collected?
Samples are taken by gently swabbing the inner cheek of the mouth, also known as the buccal swab method.
What is the cost?
The cost of genetic testing is $37.95 per person to be paid by the non-custodial parent. A payment plan for costs can be addressed at the negotiation conference. We strongly encourage the use of this service.
When will I get the results?
Results are available in approximately 30 days after all samples are collected. Results are highly confidential and are only provided to the custodial parent, non-custodial parent or the attorney of record.
Will the father's name be added to the birth certificate?
Once a court order is established, the Jefferson County Child Support Program will file appropriate documents with the Bureau of Vital Records. These documents will add the father's name to the legal birth certificate.
