The Substance Abuse Counseling Program (SACP) offers a unique treatment program based on the Brief Counseling and Solution Focused Models of Treatment. Philosophy: People who struggle with substance abuse want to reach personal goals, yet are utilizing behaviors which are counterproductive. Many times people who are abusing substances are not able to see themselves handling their life issues any other way or have lost hope that change is possible. People are in a constant state of change. Clients are individuals, and use substances for differing reasons. Unless we provide a thorough assessment to determine how a particular client wants his/her life to be without the use substances and what changes that the clients and referral sources see as necessary, we will not be of help. If clients are accepted for who they are, and if they are able to explore their strengths and past successes in a structured way, they can build upon these strengths to conquer their substance abuse and reach their personal goals. Theories: We use a combination of Solution Focused Therapy, Brief Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. These theories are unchanged in their application, yet they are combined in varying proportions to utilize the strengths of all three of the theories. The foundation of all interventions comes from Solution Focused Therapy. Interventions: All interventions are based upon the client's need. Once the client's goals are identified, appropriate Solution Focused interventions are utilized.
