McIntyre Outfall at Swamp Angel Detention Basin

Fact Sheet- August 6, 2010

Project Overview:
Urban Drainage Flood Control District (UDFCD) and Jefferson County contracted design services with Olsson Associates to develop the plans to increase the storage capacity of Swamp Angel Detention Pond and thus help alleviate drainage problems in the Fairmount area.

What Is Being Constructed?
The Swamp Angel Pond is located southwest of McIntyre Street and 50th Avenue in the Coors Technology Center.  A portion of McIntyre Street between 50th Avenue and Table Mountain Parkway will be raised, and the western portion of the pond bottom will be excavated to increase the stormwater storage capacity from 26 acre-feet to 53 acre-feet.  Storm sewer will be constructed in McIntyre Street between Table Mountain Parkway and the Croke Canal to transport the runoff into the Clear Creek drainage system.

What Has Been Done So Far?

  • The contractor has completed lowering the north end of the pond.  Seeding and the installation of plant materials has been completed.
  • A temporary irrigation system has been installed to water the new plantings.
  • McIntyre Street between 48th and 50th Avenues has been raised and is open to traffic.
  • The contractor has completed the installation of the 24" storm pipe system in McIntyre Street and the roadway has been paved and striped.
  • The private driveways on the east side of McIntyre have been regraded and paved.
  • Construction of the pond sediment basin and outlet works, located in the south pond area, is now complete.

What is coming up?

  • The contractor has completed the major work activities and is presently finishing minor "punch list" items.  Final completion and acceptance should occur in August.
  • Final inspection by Mount Olivet of the modifications to their water collection system is scheduled for August.

Chatfield Avenue (South Yukon Way to Everett Street) - Phase II

Project Update:  August 20, 2010

Project Scope:  The West Chatfield Avenue Phase II project will make roadway and drainage improvements along Chatfield Avenue from South Yukon Street to South Everett Way.

The purpose of this project is to implement improvements, based on the conceptual design in the Chatfield Corridor Study (2004).   Varying widths of right-of-way and easements have been acquired to supplement the existing right-of-way.  The project is funded with Southeast Jefferson County One-Half Cent Sales Tax District revenues.  The project has been awarded to Premier Paving, Inc.

Design Plans:  Chatfield Avenue Plans

Progress Update:  Final design complete.

What has been done so far?

    • Meadowbrook Fairview Water and Sanitation District’s contractor, JBS Pipeline, continues to relocate water lines and sanitary sewer lines for the roadway construction.
    • Numerous other utilities owned by Xcel Energy (electric and gas), Qwest, and Comcast are also being relocated throughout the construction site.
    • Jefferson County’s contractor, Premier Paving, Inc. (PPI) has milled the westbound lanes from South Yukon Street to South Carr Street and is prepping the area for the new curb, gutter, sidewalk, and asphalt.
    • Short retaining walls have been constructed on the south side of West Chatfield Avenue between South Zephyr Street and South Allison Street.  New curb and gutter has also been placed in this area as well.
    • During the road closure of West Chatfield Avenue the week of August 1st, PPI’s subcontractor Scott Contracting Inc., excavated across West Chatfield Avenue at South Dudley Street for the new concrete box culvert to improve drainage for the Massey Draw drainageway.  The box culvert was placed, the roadway backfilled, and temporary pavement placed during the road closure as well. The new box culvert under the roadway is approximately 160 feet long, 22 feet wide and 7 feet high.
    • Scott Contracting is also constructing new storm sewer on the north side of West Chatfield Avenue from South Yarrow Street to South Yukon Way, and in the vicinity of South Dudley Street.

What is planned for next month?

    • Utility relocations will continue throughout the project site.
    • Most new utility poles have been set by Xcel Energy.  As soon as the overhead lines from Comcast and Qwest are transferred to the new poles, the old poles will be removed.
    • Placement of soil riprap in the Massey Draw drainageway and drop structures constructed from large boulders will be placed at the north and south ends of the concrete box culvert at South Dudley Street.
    • New curb, gutter, sidewalk and asphalt will be placed on the north half of West Chatfield Avenue between South Yukon Street. and South Carr Street.
    • Construction of new large retaining walls should also begin in the next few weeks.
    • There will be continued significant construction along West Chatfield Avenue between South Everett Way and South Yukon Street.  Traffic control devices, (signs, barrels, cones, and temporary striping) will help guide motorists through the construction zone.  Due to the congested work area and rough road, please drive slowly and expect delays.  Alternate routes are strongly suggested.

Plainview Road Over Coal Creek - Bridge Repair Project

                                                 Notice of Bridge Repairs!

Project
Scope:  Plainview Road is located west of State Highway 93 and north of State Highway 72, just before Coal Creek Canyon.  Repairs are planned for the deck and concrete girders, as years of poor drainage have deteriorated the surfaces.  New bridge rail will be added and guardrail will be extended to improve vehicle safety along the sides.

Jefferson County is using the design and construction oversight services of Lonco, Inc., a well-known bridge design frim in the Denver area.  ABCO Contracting was awarded the construction contract.

Work will be conducted so that one-half of the bridge is repaired at a time.  As a result, traffic will be restricted to one lane crossing the bridge at all times.  Signs and barriers will direct drivers safely around the work zones.

The funds for the bridge repairs will be coming from the new FASTER  fees charged for vehicle registrations.  The project is expected to cost less than $150,000.

Project Update:  Work is expected to begin in August, 2010, and continue through October.

Sutton Trail Project

Project Scope:  This project consists of building a 4-foot wide concrete pan with a 4-foot wide concrete shoulder.  The concrete pan and shoulder will be contructed along the north side of Sutton Road between Davis Avenue (King Sooper's retail center) and Wolff Avenue (West Jefferson County Elementary School) in Aspen Park, Colorado.  The design also includes updating existing storm sewer crossings and installing inlets and additional storm sewer to collect minor storm events.  The template for Sutton Road will consist of a minimum 22-foot wide asphalt paved roadway with new 4-foot wide concrete drainage pan and a 4-wide concrete shoulder.  The project is approximately 3,000 feet in length.
This project is being designed by Jefferson County staff.  Construction is anticipated to cost $600,000 and will be funded by Jefferson County.

Bowles/Wadsworth Intersection

Project Scope:  The project will provide for a new southbound through lane on Wadsworth Boulevard.  It will also provide new acceleration and deceleration lanes for both Bowles Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.  There will be a new sidewalk on the west side of Wadsworth between Parkhill Avenue and Bowles Avenue. A new pedestrian bridge over Wadsworth (200' north of Bowles) will be included in the project to enhance the pedestrian and bicyclist safety at the intersection.  The project is funded by two federal grants and by the South Jeffco One-Half Cent Sales Tax Fund.
