Roadways Available for Adoption
Participate in an activity that promotes civic responsibility, community pride and camaraderie with your organization by adopting a Jefferson County roadway.
Thousands of citizens and organizations across Colorado are part of the Adopt-a-Highway volunteer effort, such as churches, scout groups, employee associations, retired employee associations, non-profits, service clubs, as well as families and individuals.
Those that adopt roadways in unincorporated Jefferson County help keep roadways clean, save taxpayer money and increase public awareness about litter control.

How does the Program Work?
A two-year commitment is required, with at least two trash pickups per year.
Most adoptable roadway sections are approximately two miles long. Orange safety vests, trash bags and bagged trash pickup are provided to the group by Jefferson County.
Jefferson County will place a sign, with your group's name, at each end of your adopted roadway segment. A hinged warning sign will be included below the group name sign. The warning sign is to be opened while you are collecting trash to alert motorists that a litter pickup is in progress. When the pickup is complete, the hinged warning sign needs to be closed back to the original position. The following day, personnel from the county Road & Bridge Division pick up the collected trash.
Before beginning a pick up, each group or individual should:
- Open the warning sign on the adopt a highway sign post
- Put on orange safety vests
- Have immediate access to an adequate first aid kit
- Select a hospital/emergency room and know the quickest route to it
- Have immediate transportation available
- Carpool whenever possible
- Call 303-271-8495 for trash pick up

What if the Roadway I Want to Adopt is Not Listed?
If the segment you would like to adopt is not on this list, please call us at 303-271-8495, and we will determine if the road has already been adopted or if it could be added to the list. If the roadway has already been adopted, you will be added to a waiting list. The existing adopter has the first right to renew their adoption, but should they give up a roadway, it is offered to the next applicant on the waiting list.
