Horses ready for adoption

Several horses and a donkey became the property of Jefferson County after being seized from a horse owner during an investigation of animal cruelty and neglect. Although the animals suffered to varying degrees from the abuse and neglect they endured, they have recovered well. They have been properly cared for in recent months by our Animal Control officers with the help of several local veterinarians, farriers and others in the local equestrian community.

The animals are now ready for adoption. Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest to Jefferson County Animal Control by August 28, 2009 via email at
animal-control@jeffco.us or ATTN: Horse Adoption, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, #160, Golden, CO, 80401. Animal control officers will conduct site visits and interviews with potential adopters to determine a good placement. Mantis -- ADOPTED!

AGE (Approximate): 12
GENDER: Mare
BREED: Quarter horse type
COLOR: Bay
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: She is trained and ridable. We do not know the extent of her training. She is a quiet mare.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: None
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does fine on grass hay.

Peaches -- ADOPTED!

AGE (Approximate): 17
GENDER: Mare
BREED: Quarter horse
COLOR: Dun
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: She is a dominant mare. She loves attention but it is unknown how much training she has had. She is halter trained and easy to handle.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: She is a founder case and requires shoes on her front hooves.
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Grass hay only and she does very well.

Noches -- ADOPTED!

AGE (Approximate): 16+
GENDER: Mare
BREED: Mustang
COLOR: Black
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: She is halter trained. We have only had the halter on her once. She is very timid but kind.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: None
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does well on grass hay.

BREED: Mustang/Quarter horse type
COLOR: Bay
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Foxy is very friendly. She is halter trained but doesn’t always lead. The majority of the time, she requires sedation to trim her hooves. She does well on pasture or grass hay.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: None

BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Stormy’s training is unknown. She is halter trained and you can sit on her.

GENDER: Gelding
BREED: Quarter horse

BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Is trained and ridable. He is very calm.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: Okie may require supplemental feed such as equine senior.
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does well on alfalfa or grass hay.

AGE (Approximate): 29+
GENDER: Gelding
BREED: Paint pony
COLOR: Sorrel and white
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Can be a companion animal or considered for light riding.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: He has had possible issues with founder in the past and also has blocked sinuses which cause him to have irritated eyes. He is treated with eye medication frequently.
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: He is currently on grass hay. If he begins to lose weight, he is supplemented with alfalfa and equine senior feed.

AGE (Approximate): 23+
GENDER: Gelding
BREED: Quarter horse/Draft type
COLOR: Gray (White)
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: To be considered as companion animal only. Possible neurological issues, he behaves as if he does not always know where his left rear leg is (proprioception) and does occasionally walk sideways.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: He has neurological and/or possible nerve issues. He is a special needs horse.
FEEDING CONSIDERATION: Is currently on pasture and does fine on grass hay.

Buddy -- ADOPTED!

AGE (Approximate): 6
GENDER: Gelding
BREED: Mustang
COLOR: Gruella with a star and strip
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Already trained but has not been ridden in at least four to five years. He is trained in western and has been roped off of. He is a good horse and a dominant male.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: None
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does fine on grass hay.

COLOR: Black with white star and strip
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: She is not yet trained and has great potential. She has never been handled but has come a long way in letting some of us near her.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: Allergies to fly bites
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does well on grass hay.

Sampson

AGE (Approximate): 14
GENDER: Gelding
BREED: Mustang
COLOR: Red roan
BEHAVIORAL CONSIDERATIONS: Sampson is a very interesting horse. It has been said that he flunked the training with the Bureau of Land Management twice. He requires a patient and experienced handler. He can be haltered and eventually trained. He is very relaxed in pasture and does not do well confined in a stall or away from other horses. Special consideration will have to be given to any possible adopter.
HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: He has dental issues which have not been addressed yet.
FEEDING CONSIDERATIONS: Is currently on pasture and does well on grass hay.
